How to Download Bank Statements as CSV (Every Major Bank)

Published on March 9, 2026 by CapyParse Team

Need your bank transactions in a spreadsheet? Most major US banks let you download recent activity as CSV, but the process, format options, and limitations vary wildly. This guide covers step-by-step instructions for all 11 major banks, plus what to do when CSV download isn't enough.

Key Distinction

Banks offer two different things that people often confuse:

  • Transaction CSV download: A list of debits/credits from your account activity page. Limited to 12-24 months, sometimes capped (e.g., Chase limits to 1,000 rows). Good for basic bookkeeping.
  • Statement PDF download: The official monthly document with balances, fees, interest, and summaries. Available for 5-7 years. Required for mortgage applications, audits, and compliance.

This guide covers both, and what to do when you need statement data in spreadsheet format.

Bank-by-Bank Comparison

Here's a quick overview of what each major bank offers for direct downloads:

Bank CSV Excel OFX/QFX QBO History Limit
Chase✓ QFX~24 months
Bank of AmericaDiscontinuedDiscontinued~18 months
Wells Fargo✓ QFX~18 months
Capital One✓ QFX90 days
TD Bank✓ OFX~18 months
CitiVaries*~6 months
US BankDiscontinuedDiscontinued90-day chunks
PNC✓ QFX~2 years
Ally✓ QFX~18 months
DiscoverDiscontinued~12 months
Fifth Third✓ QFX~6 months

Every bank on this list supports CSV. The big trend in 2025-2026 is that banks are discontinuing QFX, OFX, and QBO downloads. Bank of America, US Bank, and Discover have all dropped these formats. If you rely on QBO or OFX for QuickBooks/Quicken, you may need a PDF converter as a workaround. *Citi lists QFX/QBO in their UI but some users report the dropdown is locked to CSV only.

Chase

Chase offers CSV, Excel, QFX, and QBO downloads for checking, savings, and credit card accounts, one of the best format selections of any US bank.

How to download:

  1. Log in to chase.com and select your account
  2. Go to the Account Activity tab
  3. Click the download icon (arrow pointing down, in the top-right area of the activity section)
  4. Select your date range and choose CSV, Excel, QFX, or QBO
  5. Click Download

Limitations: ~24 months of history. Chase silently truncates at 1,000 rows with no error message, so if your date range has more transactions, you'll get an incomplete file without warning. Credit card and checking accounts have slightly different column formats.

For older statements or full PDF data, see our Chase statement converter guide.

Bank of America

Bank of America now offers CSV only for transaction downloads. QFX and OFX downloads were permanently discontinued on September 30, 2025.

How to download:

  1. Log in to bankofamerica.com and select your account
  2. Click See All Transactions
  3. Scroll to the Activity section and click Download on the right
  4. Select your time period and click Download Transactions

Limitations: ~18 months for checking/savings, ~12 months for credit cards. QFX/OFX/QBO formats are no longer available. If you need QBO for QuickBooks, you'll need to convert the CSV or use a PDF converter.

Need to convert older PDF statements? See our Bank of America converter guide.

Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo supports CSV and QFX (Web Connect) downloads.

How to download:

  1. Log in to wellsfargo.com and select your account
  2. Go to Account Activity
  3. Look for the Download Account Activity link above the transaction list
  4. Choose your date range and select Comma Separated (CSV) or Quicken (QFX)
  5. Click Download

Limitations: ~18 months of activity. The download is from the live transaction feed, not official statements, so no running balances or statement summaries are included. The CSV option is labeled "Comma Separated" in the dropdown.

For older statements, see our Wells Fargo converter guide.

Capital One

Capital One provides CSV and QFX downloads, but with a notably short date range limit.

How to download:

  1. Log in to capitalone.com on a desktop browser (CSV export is not available in the mobile app)
  2. Select your account and go to the Activity page
  3. Click the Download button
  4. Select your date range and choose CSV or QFX
  5. Click Download

Limitations: CSV download limited to 90 days only, significantly shorter than most banks. Desktop browser required (no mobile export). Credit cards have separate Debit/Credit columns; 360 checking/savings use a single signed Amount column. For data beyond 90 days, you'll need PDF statements.

Need more history? See our Capital One converter guide.

TD Bank

TD Bank offers CSV, OFX, and QBO downloads through its online banking portal.

How to download:

  1. Log in to td.com and go to My Accounts
  2. Click the down arrow next to the account toggle to open the Download Transactions screen
  3. Select your format: CSV, OFX, or QBO
  4. Set your date range and click Download

Limitations: ~18 months of activity. TD's CSV columns include Date, Description, Debit, Credit, and Balance. The QBO option imports directly into QuickBooks.

For PDF conversion, see our TD Bank converter guide.

Citi

Citi's download dialog lists CSV, QFX, QBO, and OFX, but in practice, CSV may be the only working option. Multiple users report the format dropdown is locked to CSV regardless of selection.

How to download:

  1. Log in to citibank.com and select your account
  2. Go to Account Details and scroll to transactions
  3. Look for the Download/Export option
  4. Select CSV format and your date range
  5. Click Download

Limitations: Business accounts limited to ~180 days. Personal account limits vary. Despite the UI listing other formats, CSV is the most reliable download option. For QBO/OFX, you may need a converter.

For older Citi statements, see our Citi converter guide.

US Bank

US Bank now offers CSV only after a recent website redesign that removed QFX and other format options.

How to download:

  1. Log in to usbank.com on a desktop browser (not available in mobile app)
  2. Go to the Transactions tile
  3. Click the download icon in the top-right corner
  4. Choose your date range (max 90 days per download)
  5. Click Download

Limitations: Downloads limited to 90-day chunks: you must download multiple files and combine them for longer periods. Transactions older than ~18 months cannot be downloaded at all. QFX, OFX, and QBO formats were removed in US Bank's recent redesign. Desktop only.

For older statements, see our US Bank converter guide.

PNC

PNC offers CSV, QFX, QBO, and OFX downloads, one of the better format selections among US banks.

How to download:

  1. Log in to pnc.com and go to My Accounts
  2. Select your account and go to Account Activity
  3. Change the date filter to Custom Date Range and set your dates
  4. Click Export and select format: CSV, QFX, QBO, or OFX
  5. Download the file

Limitations: Up to ~2 years of history for CSV. QFX is limited to 90 days, so use CSV for older data. The Export button may only appear after you've loaded transactions with a date filter. PNC labels the feature as "Export" rather than "Download."

For PDF statements, see our PNC converter guide.

Ally

Ally Bank provides CSV and QFX downloads with a clean, modern interface.

How to download:

  1. Log in to ally.com and select your account
  2. Navigate to Transaction History
  3. Click Export
  4. Choose CSV or QFX
  5. Set the date range and download

Limitations: ~18 months of transaction history. Ally's online-only model means the website is the only option (no branch access).

For PDF conversion, see our Ally converter guide.

Discover

Discover offers CSV and Excel downloads. QFX and OFX were permanently discontinued. Discover dropped both Direct Connect and Web Connect formats.

How to download:

  1. Log in to discover.com on a desktop browser
  2. Go to Activity or Transactions
  3. Set your date range
  4. Click Download/Export and choose CSV or Excel
  5. Download the file

Limitations: ~12 months of download history. QFX and OFX have been permanently removed. CSV does not include pending transactions or some adjustments that only appear on official statements. If you need QBO/OFX format, you'll need a converter.

For older statements or other formats, see our Discover converter guide.

Fifth Third

Fifth Third Bank offers CSV, QFX, and QBO downloads through its online banking portal, though the CSV history is more limited than most banks.

How to download:

  1. Log in to 53.com and select your account
  2. Navigate to Transaction History
  3. Click Download/Export
  4. Choose CSV, QFX, or QBO
  5. Set your date range and download

Limitations: CSV download reportedly limited to ~6 months of data. The default date range reflects the last 30 days. For older transactions, you'll need PDF statements.

For PDF conversion, see our Fifth Third converter guide.

What If Your Bank Only Offers PDF Statements?

Every bank on this list offers CSV downloads for recent transactions. But there are common situations where direct download doesn't work:

Older statements

CSV downloads cap at 12-24 months. PDF statements go back 5-7 years. If you need 2023 or 2024 data, PDF conversion is the only way.

Official statements needed

Mortgage applications, audits, and loan approvals require actual bank statements, not just transaction exports. You need the PDF, then convert it.

Row limits exceeded

High-volume accounts (especially business accounts) can hit row caps on CSV downloads. Chase, for example, limits to 1,000 rows. PDF statements contain all transactions regardless.

Format not available

Need QBO format from a bank that only offers CSV? Need Excel from a bank that only does CSV? A converter gives you any output format from any PDF.

In these cases, CapyParse converts PDF bank statements to CSV, Excel, or QBO format in seconds. Upload the PDF, and the AI extracts every transaction with 99%+ accuracy.

Tips for Business Owners and Accountants

  • Download monthly: Set a monthly reminder to download your transactions as CSV. Most banks overwrite older data, so if you don't save it within the window, you'll need the PDF route.
  • Use QBO for QuickBooks: If your bank offers QBO download (Chase, TD Bank, PNC, Fifth Third), use it instead of CSV. It imports into QuickBooks with one click and preserves more transaction metadata. Note that Bank of America and US Bank have discontinued their QBO/OFX options. See our QuickBooks import guide for details.
  • Check column consistency: Banks sometimes change their CSV column layout. If your import process breaks, check whether the bank updated their export format.
  • Batch convert old statements: If you have a backlog of PDF statements from past years, upload them all at once to CapyParse. Processing multiple files in a single batch is faster than converting one at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I download my bank statement as a CSV file?

Most major US banks let you download recent transaction history as CSV from their online banking portal. However, this is transaction data only, not a full statement. CSV downloads are typically limited to 12-24 months and some banks cap row counts (e.g., Chase limits to 1,000 rows). For older or complete statement data, download the PDF and convert it.

Q: What is the difference between downloading transactions and downloading a bank statement?

Transaction downloads give you a list of debits and credits. Bank statements are official monthly documents with opening/closing balances, fees, interest, and account summaries. For bookkeeping, either may work. For mortgage applications, audits, or legal purposes, you need the full statement.

Q: Which banks let you download CSV files directly?

Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One, TD Bank, Citi, US Bank, PNC, Ally, Discover, and Fifth Third all offer CSV or Excel transaction downloads. The exact formats and date range limits vary by bank. See the comparison table above.

Q: How do I convert a PDF bank statement to CSV?

Upload the PDF to a bank statement converter like CapyParse. The tool uses AI to extract transaction data and export it as CSV, Excel, or QBO. This works for any bank and any statement age.

Q: What format should I download for QuickBooks?

QBO (Web Connect) gives the smoothest import into QuickBooks. If your bank offers QBO or OFX, use that. If only CSV is available, QuickBooks can import it using the CSV import tool. If your bank only provides PDFs, convert them to QBO format using CapyParse. See our QuickBooks import guide for detailed steps.

Q: How far back can I download bank transactions as CSV?

Most banks limit CSV downloads to 12-24 months. Chase offers about 24 months, Bank of America and Wells Fargo up to 18 months, Capital One only 90 days, and Discover about 12 months. For older data, download the PDF statements (available for 5-7 years at most banks) and convert them to CSV.
