Why QuickBooks turns down most bank CSVs

QuickBooks Online accepts a CSV only in one of two layouts: three columns (Date, Description, Amount) or four columns (Date, Description, Credit, Debit). A bank's own export usually has extra columns, notes above the header, or dates in another order, so the upload fails or the columns land in the wrong place.

QuickBooks Desktop is stricter. It imports bank files only as Web Connect (.qbo) files. A QBO file carries each transaction's date, amount, payee and id in fixed fields, so neither version has to guess what a column means.

Built for messy bank exports

No two banks export a CSV the same way. These are the differences the converter already handles.

Notes above the header

Many bank files start with the account name and date range. The converter finds the real header row below them.

Separate money in and out columns

Debit and Credit, Withdrawals and Deposits, or Paid out and Paid in become one signed amount.

Every way banks write a minus

A leading minus, a trailing minus, parentheses, and CR or DR after the number all read correctly.

Day-first dates and decimal commas

Files from Europe and elsewhere often write 28/01/2025 and 1.234,56. The converter detects both and lets you change the date order.

Repeat rows stay separate

Two identical coffees on the same day get different transaction ids. Converting the same file again gives the same ids, so an app that checks ids can spot a repeat import.

Nothing disappears quietly

A row the converter cannot read is listed with its row number and the reason, so you can fix the file or add it by hand.

CSV to OFX questions

Is this CSV to OFX converter free?

Yes. There is no signup and no limit on files or rows. The conversion runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer.

Can I convert an Excel file to OFX?

Yes. Drop an .xlsx or .xls file and the converter reads its first sheet. If your transactions are on another sheet, move them to the first one or save that sheet as CSV.

Should I download OFX or QBO for QuickBooks?

Download QBO. QuickBooks Desktop imports bank files only as Web Connect (.qbo) files, and QuickBooks Online accepts CSV only in its own 3 or 4 column layout. A QBO file avoids both problems.

Why do my purchases show as money in?

Some card exports list charges as positive numbers. Tick Flip signs so money out shows as negative, then check the preview before you download.

What happens to rows the converter cannot read?

A row with no date or amount it can read is left out of the file and listed with its row number. Totals and notes at the end of a bank export usually land in that list.

I only have PDF statements. Can I still get an OFX or QBO file?

Yes, with the bank statement converter. It reads PDF statements, including scans, and exports CSV, Excel or QBO. The first 10 pages are free with no credit card.
