Why QuickBooks needs QBO, not QIF

QIF is the plain text format Quicken has used for decades. QuickBooks never adopted it. QuickBooks Online uploads take QBO, QFX or CSV files, and its CSV import only accepts a 3 or 4 column layout. QuickBooks Desktop imports Web Connect files, which are QBO.

A QBO file is an OFX file with a bank id that QuickBooks checks before it imports. This converter reads the transactions from your QIF, writes them in that format, and adds the bank id you choose.

How to convert QIF to QBO

  1. 1

    Export the QIF from Quicken

In Quicken for Windows, choose File > Export > QIF File. Pick one account or all of them, and the date range you need.

  2. 2

    Drop the file above

Check the first few dates in the preview. If January 5 shows as May 1, switch the date order.

  3. 3

    Pick the bank

Search for your bank, or keep the stand-in id. Add the last four digits of the account number if you want them in the file.

  4. 4

    Import into QuickBooks

Online: Banking, then Upload transactions. Desktop: File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files. QuickBooks asks which account to use.

Four things to know about QIF files

Dates can be read two ways

QIF dates have no fixed order, so 01/05/24 can mean January 5 or 1 May. When a day over 12 appears, the converter knows the order. When none does, it assumes month first and lets you switch.

No account number in the file

QIF stores the account name, not its number. QuickBooks asks which account to add the transactions to on import, so the number is optional.

Quicken for Mac

Quicken for Mac has not exported QIF since Quicken Mac 2007. On a Mac, export CSV from Quicken or start from the bank statements.

Using Xero instead?

Xero imports QIF files directly, so you do not need this converter. Upload the QIF from the bank account in Xero.

QIF to QBO questions

Can QuickBooks import a QIF file?

No. QuickBooks Online uploads take QBO, QFX or CSV files, and QuickBooks Desktop imports Web Connect (.qbo) files. Neither opens QIF, so the file has to be converted first.

How do I export a QIF file from Quicken?

In Quicken for Windows, choose File > Export > QIF File, pick the account and date range, and save. Quicken for Mac has not offered QIF export since Quicken Mac 2007.

Which bank should I pick?

A QIF file does not say which bank it came from. Pick your bank if it is listed, or keep the stand-in id. The transactions import the same either way, and QuickBooks only uses the bank as a label.

Do my Quicken categories carry over?

No. A QBO file carries the date, payee, amount, memo and check number of each transaction, with no category field. You categorize the transactions in QuickBooks after the import.

What happens if I import the same file twice?

Each transaction gets the same id every time you convert the same file. QuickBooks uses that id to recognize transactions it has already imported, so a second import does not double them up.

Can I convert a Quicken investment account?

No. Investment sections (!Type:Invst) are skipped with a warning, because a QBO bank file has no place for buys, sells or share counts. Bank, cash and credit card registers convert.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file never leaves your computer. Nothing is sent to CapyParse or anyone else.

Have the PDF statements instead?

If Quicken is gone or the QIF has gaps, start from the bank's PDF statements. CapyParse turns them into CSV, Excel or QBO, and you review every transaction before you export.
