What Amex exports natively, and where it stops

American Express has one of the better native exports, and for recent activity it works well. The gap is everything older. Here is what each option covers:

CSV / Excel (activity)Statements & Activity, download optionRoughly the last 12 to 18 monthsExports the live activity feed, not your official statements. Older billing periods never appear as options.

Amex export behavior as of August 2026.

Amex keeps more statement history online than any major bank, up to a decade. That archive is PDF only, and it is what CapyParse converts, which matters most for multi-year tax work, audits, and expense reconstruction.

Built for the way Amex prints statements

Amex prints charge card, credit card, and business statements in their own layouts. CapyParse reads each one as printed:

Charge and credit cards

Platinum, Gold, and Green charge cards convert alongside Blue Cash and EveryDay credit cards. Charges, payments, credits, and fees keep their categories and directions.

Membership Rewards noise ignored

Points summaries and offer sections stay out of your export. You get the actual transactions, nothing else.

Employee cards on business statements

Business card statements that break out spending per employee card convert with every transaction attached to the right card.

Foreign transactions

International charges list the original currency and conversion details. Both stay attached to the right transaction instead of becoming stray rows.

Three formats out, ready for your tools

CSV

Opens directly in Excel and Google Sheets with dates, descriptions, and amounts in separate columns. The universal import format for every accounting tool.

Excel (XLSX)

Native spreadsheet formatting, one sheet per account on combined statements, ready for pivot tables and formulas.

QBO for QuickBooks

A Web Connect file with the financial institution details QuickBooks verifies, so imports work on the first try instead of failing with a bank error.

Review everything before you export

Every extracted transaction appears next to the original statement page, with anything unusual flagged for a second look. Nothing leaves for your books until you have seen it.

Amex conversion questions

How do I download Amex transactions as a CSV?

Sign in at americanexpress.com, open Statements & Activity, and use the download option to export CSV or Excel for a date range or statement period. The activity export reaches back roughly 12 to 18 months. For older billing periods, download the PDF statements and convert them with CapyParse.

What columns does the Amex CSV export include?

As of mid-2026, the basic Amex export includes Date, Description, and Amount, with an extended option that adds merchant and category detail. Charges are positive and payments negative. A CapyParse export mirrors the statement itself and normalizes direction into a consistent, import-ready format.

How far back can I get Amex statements?

American Express keeps up to 10 years of PDF billing statements online for most cards, the deepest archive of any major issuer. The activity download covers only 12 to 18 months. Download the statements you need, upload them to CapyParse in one batch, and export the whole history as CSV, Excel, or QBO.

Does this work with Amex charge cards and business cards?

Yes. Platinum, Gold, and Green charge cards, Blue Cash and EveryDay credit cards, and Business cards with employee card sections all convert, with each transaction keeping its type, direction, and cardholder.

Can I import Amex statements into QuickBooks?

Yes. Export as QBO (Web Connect) and upload it in QuickBooks under Banking, then Upload transactions. CapyParse fills in the financial institution details QuickBooks checks, so the file imports without the "unable to verify financial institution" error.

Is it safe to upload my Amex statement?

All uploads are encrypted in transit via HTTPS. Your documents are stored securely, only you can access your data, and you can delete any document from your dashboard at any time.
