What BMO exports natively, and where it stops

BMO took its detailed Online Banking help centre offline, so the download limits below are the last figures BMO published, from pages archived in 2023. The statement facts are current. Here is what each option covers:

FormatWhereHistoryThe catch
CSV / QuickBooks / Quicken / Simply Accounting / MoneyDownload Account Details on a chequing or savings accountA date range of up to 123 days, or activity since your last downloadBMO’s own last published figure, and BMO recommended downloading at least monthly. Loans, mortgages, and lines of credit were not downloadable at all. Users report a CSV with variable header rows, a total row, and dollar signs in the amounts, which spreadsheet importers trip on.
Same formats, BMO MastercardDownload Account Details on the card accountUp to 3 months of transactions plus unbilled activityAgain BMO’s last published figure. A tax year of card activity never comes out of this screen, which is the complaint behind most “BMO export to Excel” searches.
PDF eStatementsMy Accounts, the account, Change Statement Options to enrol, then the statement listUp to 7 yearsChequing, savings, credit cards, lines of credit, and mutual funds. A closed account loses access, so save the PDFs before you close one. Online Banking for Business keeps 7 years too, under Account Information, eStatements.

BMO export behavior as of October 2026.

Four months of chequing and three months of Mastercard is enough for someone who downloads every month. It is not enough for a year-end, a CRA review, or a client whose last download was never. The eStatement PDFs are the complete record, and CapyParse converts them to CSV, Excel, or QBO with one row per transaction.

From BMO PDF to spreadsheet in two short steps

Get your eStatement PDFs from BMO Online Banking

  1. 1Sign in to BMO Online Banking, open My Accounts, pick the account, and choose Change Statement Options if you are still on paper. Select eStatements and Verify Statement Options. The app shows the same statements.
  2. 2Open the statement list and save each month as a PDF. Business clients go to Account Information, eStatements, Account Statements in Online Banking for Business.
  3. 3Upload the batch here. Each month is read on its own and the exports line up as one table in statement order, whether the statements are in English or French.

Convert with CapyParse

  1. 1Upload the PDFs, digital or scanned, one statement or a whole year in a batch.
  2. 2Review every extracted transaction next to the original page, with anything unusual flagged for a quick check.
  3. 3Export CSV, Excel, or QBO. Multi-account statements come out as one clean file per account.

Built for the way BMO prints statements

BMO prints chequing, credit card, and business statements in different layouts, and in two languages. CapyParse reads each one as printed:

French statements, French dates

A relevé de carte Mastercard prints dates as day then month, like 12 avr. The month names are read in French and the day-month order is kept, so 3 juin never becomes March 6.

Several cardholders on one card statement

Business and family Mastercard statements list each cardholder’s purchases in their own section. Each section is kept as its own account in the export, so a bookkeeper can see who spent what, and the statement balance still reconciles across all of them.

Withdrawals and deposits in two columns

Chequing and business statements split money out and money in with a running balance. The export keeps both columns and adds a signed amount, so QuickBooks and Excel each get what they prefer.

Business statement totals

Online Banking for Business statements print closing totals for the period. Those totals are used to check the rows and never land in your amount column as if they were transactions.

Tested on real BMO business account and BMO Mastercard statements, including French-language card statements with several cardholders.

Where the BMO figures come from

BMO used to publish precise download limits: 123 days for chequing and savings, three months plus unbilled activity for Mastercard, five formats including CSV, and a note that loans, mortgages, and lines of credit could not be downloaded at all. Those pages are gone from bmo.com now. The current digital banking pages describe viewing and filtering transactions and say nothing about export, so the archived figures are the best BMO has said on the subject.

Nothing suggests the limits got longer. Users still describe the download as about three months, the Quicken forums still carry BMO connection failures with manual file import as the workaround, and BMO’s QuickBooks Online connection for business shows two years of chequing and savings detail, not more.

The statements are the part BMO keeps current. Seven years, every main account type, viewable online and in the app, and BMO Sync now drops them into QuickBooks Online and Sage Intacct for business clients. For everyone else, save the months you need, convert them here, and export CSV for Excel or QBO for QuickBooks with the full descriptions intact.

Three formats out, ready for your tools

CSV

Opens directly in Excel and Google Sheets with dates, descriptions, and amounts in separate columns. The universal import format for every accounting tool.

Excel (XLSX)

Native spreadsheet formatting, one sheet per account on combined statements, ready for pivot tables and formulas.

QBO for QuickBooks

A Web Connect file with the financial institution details QuickBooks verifies, so imports work on the first try instead of failing with a bank error.

Review everything before you export

Every extracted transaction appears next to the original statement page, with anything unusual flagged for a second look. Nothing leaves for your books until you have seen it.

BMO conversion questions

How do I export BMO transactions to Excel?

In BMO Online Banking, open the account under My Accounts and choose Download Account Details, then CSV. BMO’s last published limits were a 123-day range for chequing and savings and 3 months for Mastercard. For a full year, save the monthly eStatement PDFs and convert them with CapyParse, which exports CSV and Excel.

How far back can I get BMO statements?

BMO keeps up to 7 years of eStatements for chequing, savings, credit card, line of credit, and mutual fund accounts, and up to 7 years in Online Banking for Business. Enrol through Change Statement Options on the account, then save the months you need and upload them to CapyParse in one batch.

Does this work with French BMO statements?

Yes. Relevés in French convert the same way as English statements. Day-month dates like 12 avr are read correctly, French month names are understood, and the export uses the same columns, so a bookkeeper with clients in Quebec and Ontario gets one consistent file.

Does this work with BMO Mastercard statements?

Yes. BMO CashBack, Air Miles, Eclipse, and business Mastercard statements convert with purchases, payments, credits, interest, and fees kept as separate types. Statements with several cardholders keep each cardholder’s section separate, and foreign currency lines keep their exchange rate and CAD amount.

Can I import BMO statements into QuickBooks?

Yes. Export as QBO and upload it in QuickBooks Online under Banking, then Upload transactions, or in QuickBooks Desktop through Web Connect import. CapyParse fills in the financial institution details QuickBooks checks, so the file imports without the "unable to verify financial institution" error.

Is it safe to upload my BMO statement?

All uploads are encrypted in transit via HTTPS. When you sign up, your documents are stored securely in your account, only you can access them, and you can delete any document from your dashboard at any time.
